Studies of neurodegenerative diseases in recent years began to develop actively in the vastness of Israel. The efforts of the doctors finally saw the breakthrough and they’ve figured out the key to the riddle of the treatment of these diseases. This discovery made by researchers of the University Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Beersheba, and the University of California in San Diego.
What is neurodegerative disease?
Neurodegenerative diseases (NDD) is a neurological disease characterized by impaired motor functions (Alzheimer’s, for example). Motor neurons are destroyed, the patient can not control your muscles, causing them to atrophy, they are struck by paralysis. These factors lead to impaired speech, swallowing function. A distinctive feature in NDD is clarity of mind, which retains the patient.
The treatment of such diseases does not currently exist.
Causes of NDD
For many years scientists have tried to find the answer to the question of how to treat neurodegenerative diseases. After all, with absolute clarity of consciousness, the patient lives with this diagnosis only 2-5 years.
The fact is that in the early stages of this disease is very difficult to recognize, the doctors find it difficult to make a diagnosis. While modern medicine has methods to be able to pause the process only in case of early diagnosis.
Research clinical experimental medicine found that NDD occur because of disorders of metabolism and mutational changes of cellular proteins. Subsequently, they accumulate in a specific group of neurons and begin to destroy them.
Treatment of NDD
At the moment the medicine that completely cures of neurodegenerative diseases – no, but scientists are actively searching for it.
Since it is known that the destruction of motor neurons is due to protein accumulation and mutations, scientists are developing a drug that can inhibit the accumulation of incorrectly folded proteins and to oust him from neurons.
This drug will be a real breakthrough in the treatment of NDD, but unfortunately, while it is still under development.
The great contribution of the study of neurodegenerative diseases made by scientists of the University Ben-Gurion in the Negev and Beersheba. The joint research is conducted in California by the research group of Professor don Cleveland and Adrian Israelson.
The results, presented research group is the first stage of the method, which will allow to cure amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and similar diseases.
